Many ERP transformations stop at "moving the old way onto a screen." Yet the biggest opportunity is precisely to question the process again — not merely automate what already exists.
Two Different Approaches
| Approach | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Digitalizing old processes | A 10-step manual process becomes a 10-step digital process. |
| Business process transformation | The process is questioned, simplified, then run in the system. |
Both produce a "new system", but the results are very different. The first moves the old burden onto a new system. The second removes that burden.
A Simple Example
Imagine a company has a 10-step manual approval process — the result of years of habit, patchwork, and "that is how the previous person did it."
The seemingly easy option: build those 10 steps in ERP.
The better option: pause and ask:
- Are all 10 steps still needed?
- Is any step merely a formality?
- Can any be combined?
- Can any control be automated?
Often, 10 steps can become 4 — without losing control.
Why This Matters
Automating a messy process only produces faster chaos. The system will "run", but remain slow, expensive, and stressful. Conversely, simplifying the process first makes ERP run lighter and easier to adopt.
The Principle: Do Not Automate Chaos
Tidy up the process → Then automate
not:
Automate first → Hope it becomes tidy
Odoo provides many proven best practices. The implementation moment is a rare chance to align processes with those best practices — not to subject them to old habits.
Business Process Reengineering with Odoo
- Map the as-is process honestly.
- Challenge each step: does it add value?
- Design a simpler to-be process.
- Configure it in Odoo (standard → configuration first).
- Measure the results: cycle time, errors, cost.
Closing
ERP is not a project of copying processes into an application. It is an opportunity to improve the way work is done. The question "is this process still needed?" is often more valuable than "how do we build this process in Odoo?"
