Product Barcode, Location Barcode, and Package Barcode: What Is the Difference?

An educational article explaining the function of each barcode and how they are used in the Odoo inventory process.

In a warehouse, a barcode is not just one type. There are barcodes for products, for locations/racks, and for packages. They all look like black-and-white lines, but their functions differ — and understanding the difference is the key to making barcodes truly improve inventory accuracy instead of confusing everyone.

1. Why Are There Different Barcodes?

Everything in the warehouse has an identity that must be verified: which item, where, and in which package. That is why barcodes are distinguished by the object being identified. A single all-purpose barcode would leave the system unable to know what is being scanned.

2. Product Barcode

Identifies the item (SKU). Usually uses the manufacturer barcode (EAN/UPC/GTIN) or one generated from Odoo.

  • Function — ensures the scanned item is the correct product.
  • In Odoo — fill the product's Barcode field; scan during receipts, transfers, picking, or stock counts to increase the qty.
  • Lot/serial — for tracked products, scanning the product prompts for the lot/serial number.
  • Example — 8991234567890 for one SKU.

3. Location Barcode

Identifies the position — rack/bin/warehouse. This barcode is usually stuck on the rack.

  • Function — ensures staff are at the correct location (source or destination).
  • In Odoo — enable Storage Locations; scan the location during putaway, transfers, or stock opname. The "Count entire location" setting shows all products at that location.
  • Benefit — prevents wrong racks, wrong counts, and "lost" items.
  • Example — WH/Stock/A-01-01.

4. Package Barcode

Identifies a package — a group of items packed for one shipment.

  • Function — ties goods to one package; simplifies multi-carton shipping.
  • In Odoo — enable Packages; create a package during packing; print the package label (with barcode).
  • Benefit — at delivery, simply scan the package barcode and Odoo shows the package contents without opening it or hunting for documents.
  • Example — a unique package number PACK00012.

5. A Quick Comparison

6. How the Three Work Together

Receipt : scan PO → scan destination location → scan product (→ lot/serial)
Putaway : scan rack location → scan product
Picking : scan document → scan source location → scan product
Packing : scan product → put into package → print package label
Delivery : scan package → contents shown → validate

Notice: location confirms the place, product confirms the item, and package confirms the shipment. They complement each other.

7. Implementation Tips

  • Consistent format — set a naming pattern for locations and packages (e.g. WH/Stock/A-01-01, PACK00012).
  • Durable labels — use labels that do not fade or peel easily.
  • 2D scanner — so lot/serial and multiple pieces of information are read at once.
  • Avoid duplicate barcodes — one code per object; do not stick product barcodes on racks.
  • Print from Odoo — use Odoo's location/package barcode printing for consistency.
  • Train staff — teach the scan order (location → product → package) so nothing gets mixed up.

Closing

Product, location, and package barcodes are three different tools for three different questions: which item, where, and in which package. By understanding them — and applying them with discipline in Odoo — every scan becomes a verification that makes inventory more accurate, shipping faster, and the team more confident.
